Speech & Language Assessment
A language assessment is used to gain information about your child’s current level of ability to express themselves and understand spoken and / or written information that is presented to them.
It will give a normed score/percentile that can be used to compare their functioning to other children the same age but more usefully has subtests which can allow you to identify areas of weakness and strengths and set goals to meet their individual needs.

A single face-to-face session.
A language or pragmatic language assessment is completed in a single face-to-face session which may take up to 2 hours to complete, depending on factors such as your child’s age, ability, and the number
of subtests required to be administered.
Parents / caregivers will be asked to wait in the waiting room while
the assessment is being completed. Parents are asked to complete a developmental history to gather as much information as possible about
the child.
After this session, the Speech Pathologist will score all assessments,
review developmental history and observations, review past reports,
and liaise with other therapists (if necessary).
A comprehensive report including developmental history, observations, assessment results, and recommendations is developed. A report is provided to the family and feedback around the scores. The Speech Pathologist aims to complete the draft report and feedback session
within 2 weeks post-assessment.
A phonological assessment will take approximately 30 minutes and include the same report format as above.
An Oro-motor assessment can take up to one hour and include the same report format as above.
The tools we use for the assessment may include:
The Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Pre-school 2nd Edition (CELF P) [for ages 3-6 years]
The CELF-P 2 is a standardised language assessment tool used to identify, diagnose, and evaluate language and communication disorders in children. Performance on these various measures is summarised into three composite scores (Core Language, Receptive Language and Expressive Language).
The Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals – 5th Edition (CELF-5) [for ages 5-21 years]
The CELF-5 is a standardised language assessment tool used to identify, diagnose, and evaluate language and communication disorders in children. Performance on these various measures is summarised into three composite scores (Core Language, Receptive Language and Expressive Language).
Test of Pragmatic Language 2 – Second Edition (TOPL-2)
The Test of Pragmatic Language - Second Edition (TOPL-2) is a standardised, norm-referenced test designed to effectively assess pragmatic language ability in children and provide in-depth, comprehensive analysis of social communication in context.
Articulation Assessment
In the CLEAR Phonology Screening Assessment, each phoneme is tested individually in word initial, medial, and final positions. A wide range of initial clusters are also tested.
Oro-motor Function Assessment
This would involve a hands-on examination of the oral cavity looking at the function of the tongue, lips, cheeks, jaw, and palate to assess for functional ability.
